Artist Bio

Hello!

Thanks so much for stopping by my page!

My name is Eileen Bos and I'm a multimedia sculpture artist.

I began drawing when I was 3 and sculpting when I was 4. Like most children, Play-Doh was my medium at that age.

When I was in kindergarten, my aunt introduced me to polymer clay. She had created dog ornaments for our family featuring their beloved pets with this medium, & from there; it became my favorite material for a very long time.

The internet wasn’t available when I was little, so I spent years’ worth of time through trial & error, teaching myself the skills I obtained. Little victories among lots of failures, over & over again, until that ratio began to shift. Like so many others, I learned a LOT through things falling apart!

In Buffalo, NY, where I grew up, there was little to say for the art scene. So, I ventured into the baking industry to try to make money using my art skills. I was not a baker at that time but was hired on the spot by a local bakery for my art portfolio. I discovered that fondant was my nemesis, but modeling chocolate was very similar to the clay I so loved, & paint & frosting worked similarly, as well! I proceeded in creating & sculpting in chocolate (the mermaid in my photo collection is entirely made of chocolate). I’ve decorated hundreds of cakes thousands of cookies, & made lots of custom cake toppers for weddings & special events.

When the company I worked for was no longer the right place for me, I went off to start my own little specialty cake business. It was very small- I was a solo show, but I had wonderful clients that stayed with me for years. I also had a handful of really fun projects-

I was sought out to make the cover of Buffalo Magazine, where I sculpted a toddler-sized buffalo dressed as a chef beside a cityscape wedding cake… I was part of a Nickel City Cake challenge for Halloween… Some of my work was enjoyed by the “Extreme Home Makeover” crew when they came to Buffalo & I was asked to make an elaborate cake for TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” for a couple with an NYE Gatsby-themed wedding.

This may sound terrible, but as wonderful as all of that was, I got burnt out & needed a break.

I ventured more into non-edible sculpture, focusing on teaching myself a vast variety of materials from faux fur to silver clay. I made even more connections, which lead me to being asked to design a pair of custom sculptured shoes for Miss NY for the national Miss America stage. I also dove into creating book sculptures for authors. I cut out dozens of pages & then very carefully use an exacto knife to hand cut detail, then fold & shape the pages, sculpting 3D scenes inspired by the stories within those pages…and then I light them up! I was very fortunate to meet a handful of authors who became dear friends of mine & still are! Many of them would take their sculptures along with them on their book signing tours to draw attention to their setup, & then they’d have them as a fun, keepsake lighting features in their homes afterwards.

After that, I pushed my former sculpture size limitations & went HUGE, building a 13-foot posable dragon for a window display in NY. I created it from scratch with chicken wire, plastics, leather & paint… I created reverse-painted glass eyes coated in translucent iridescent film so that I could install color-change LEDs behind them to make her eyes glow & change color with the click of a button. And the contour of the glass gave the illusion that her pupil was moving to watch & follow you as you viewed her from different angles.

I have since fled NY and am just settling in in the beautiful mountains of the Asheville area in NC. Along with my incredible boyfriend, Joe Richichi who is also an artist & a veterinarian, we have already found some fabulous places to feature our work. His work can be found at www.DrawingsByJoe.com.  The art scene out here is vibrant & exciting. The Mulberry Tree in Black Mountain is the first beautiful shop I have my pieces in, & I have just completed my largest book sculpture to date which has taken over K2 Studios, an interior decor company, in downtown Asheville for their fall and winter window display!

I enjoy working with authors, both new and established.

Commissions are always welcome!

My work can be found in person at the following locations!
